How to prepare a "Bland Diet" for dogs

Bland diet can be a life saver, especially if your dog is experiencing diarrhea or stomach upset.

You can also use it as a back up diet if you run out of food, or if the store is out of your brand of food and you cannot do a slow switch.

    The recipe is simple:

Boil either hamburger or chicken breast in a saucepan until cooked through. I like to boil my hamburger in meatball shapes so it doesn't fall apart as much.

In a separate pan, cook plenty of white rice.

Give about 75% rice and 25% hamburger or rice, you can spoon some of the water for flavor on the rice.

If your dog becomes constipated, stop giving it!!!!

If your dog continues to experience diarrhea on the bland diet, something is not right, and you should definitely need to see a vet as soon as possible.

Have you ever prepared the bland diet? Do you do it differently? Did it help? Share your experiences!

We have done the bland diet several times. I use roughly the same ratios of rice and hamburger. We have used it in between food switches when Frank was a puppy, when Frank got out of the hospital and his stomach was upset and sensitive for a couple of weeks. It has worked very well. The most recent time was moving and we ran out of his kibble. He did fine for several days, then got constipated. Luckily his new kibble arrived and we were able to start that back up again.

Good point, too long can cause constipation! BTW, there is a huge feed store on Fort Lowell & Dodge. They carry all the good foods!
